Service No: 156
Unit No: 9th Battalion
Corps/Service:
Infantry
Country: Australia
I am searching for the missing Great War medals of George Rignold WOOD who was born in Melbourne during 1893. He enlisted in Brisbane on 9/09/14 in Queensland's 9th Battalion AIF. According to the First World War Embarkation Roll, George Rignold WOOD departed Brisbane on 24 September, 1914 aboard HMAT OMRAH. The 9th Battalion, a part of the 3rd Brigade was formed in Queensland and hold the distinction of being the first ashore at Gallipoli as part of the covering force. George was wounded in the arm at Gallipoli on or around 1st May, 1915 suffering a gun shot wound. This required him to be returned to Australia and discharged from the AIF. Underterred, he re-enlisted into the Australian Imperial Force and was allocated the service number 13112. He sailed for France as part of the Australian Army Medical Corps (Sanitary Section) but was later attached to the 10 Australian Field Ambulance. George Rignold WOOD returned to Australia in May 1919. Sadly, he died in 1928. The missing First World War medals are believed to have been sold by relatives over 20 years ago. There may even be medals for his latter service number 13112. Also, it is likely that his 1914-1915 Star simply has G. WOOD instead of G.R. WOOD. So I have listings under both service numbers.

V.GLEDHILL
Medal Type:
Service No: 1592716
Unit No: 77 Squadron
Corps/Service:
Air Force/Flying Corps
Country: United Kingdom
My family is searching for the missing war medals of our relative, Sergeant (Flight Engineer) Victor GLEDHILL. His service number was 1592716 and he served with 77 Squadron, R.A.F.V.R. (Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve). Victor GLEDHILL was killed in action on 17 June 1944, aged 19. According to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission records, he lies buried in Uden War Cemetery in the Netherlands (Holland). His war medals were sold on 20 October 1993 at DNW AUCTIONS. This auction house (Dix Noonan Webb) was at 16 Bolton St, Mayfair, London, W1J 8BQ and as British medals from the Second World War were not engraved by the government, it is clear that the medals were identifiable by other documentation which accompanied the medals. The missing medals comprise of the 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star and the 1939-1945 War Medal. They were sold together with the cardboard box of issue (which would have had the name of his father and address on the front) and condolence slip to his parents. Victor was the son of George Victor and Florence Gledhill, of Marsh, Huddersfield. We do not know how these missing war medals came to leave our family, but we would be very grateful if whoever purchased the medals would consider selling them back to us.
C.W.S.AUGER
Medal Type: WW1 - 1914-1915 Star Medal Trio
Service No: 103081
Corps/Service:
Artillery
Country: United Kingdom
My family is searching for the missing First World War medals of our Grandfather, Charles William Sorrell AUGER. This war medal set consists of the 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal. Charles William Sorrell AUGER served as a gunner in the Royal Horse Artillery in France and then Italy during the Great War. We think his medals were inadvertently left in an attic when moving and we would be extremely grateful if they could be located and returned to us. This is especially important to our family, now that the Centenary of the 1914-1918 War is here.

There are 3 medals in total, one being the 14-15 star, also missing are the Victory medal and the British medal.. Any information regarding these items would be greatly appreciated.

The medal had the following clasps - Relief of Chitral 1895 and Punjab Frontier 1897-98, Malakand 1897, Samana 1897 and Tirah 1897-98. The India Medal was awarded for various minor military campaigns in India, chiefly for service on the North-West Frontier during 1895 to 1902. This medal replaced the India General Service Medal (1854). The ribbon pattern was red, green, red, green, red. Whilst the obverse of the medal itself held the profile of Queen Victoria, or, after January 22, 1901, King Edward VII, the reverse portrayed a British and an Indian soldier carrying a standard together.
