Medals Gone Missing is wishing to locate the missing war service medals of Thomas CLEARY; or make contact with any direct descendants of Thomas CREARY (MM). Thomas served with the 47th Infantry Battalion, AIF during the Great War. According to the First World War Embarkation Roll - Thomas CLEARY, Service Number: 2982 left Australia with the rank of: Private as a reinforcement to the 3rd Infantry Battalion. Roll title: 3 Infantry Battalion - 1 to 12 Reinforcements (December 1914 - December 1915). Conflict / Operation: First World War, 1914-1918. Date of embarkation: 30 September 1915. Place of embarkation: Sydney, Ship embarked on: HMAT Argyllshire (A8). Whilst Thomas CREARY arrived in Egypt in time for inclusion in the Gallipoli campaign, there is no evidence within his service record to suggest he arrived on the Peninsula. Thomas was transferred to the 55th Infantry Battalion, then the 4th Pioneer Battalion before being transferred to the 47th Infantry Battalion. Thomas CLEARY was awarded the 1914-1915 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. He was awarded the Military Medal for bravery during the battle for Messines whilst acting as a runner (messenger). He sustained a gun shot wound to his left knee during this action which resulted in him being sent home to Australia and discharged from the army.

He applied for and was awarded the Gallipoli Medallion. He was also awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. His 1914-1915 Star was located by Medals Gone Missing and purchased at an Antiques Fair in New South Wales. This medal rightly should be reunited with the other two medals awarded to Corporal John POLLOCK. It is not for general sale and this 1914-1915 Star will only be sold to a direct descendant upon strict proof of relationship.

I am searching for all three of my grandfather's World War 1 medals. His name was John McGUINNESS and he was awarded the 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal. He finished his service with the Labour Corps, due to wounds he had sustained in the Loos Sector in March 1916 and later that year on the Somme at Guillemot in September 1916. He was allocated three different service numbers during his time with the Army and they are as follows:- 2351 / 43181 / 383720. Any assistance to help my family to recover these missing medals would be greatly appreciated.

Medals Gone Missing is seeking to make contact with a relative of Edwin John GOWLAND who served in the British Army during the Great War as Edwin GOWLAND. British Medal Roll index card does not state in which theatre of war he served. His British War Medal and Victory Medal were issued 18 June 1920, Nottingham and the Silver War Badge was issued “sick Para 392 xvia”. Edwin was born 11 September 1891, Lancashire and was the son of Edward & Catherine (nee Donoghue) GOWLAND. Edwin originally immigrated to Australia, aboard Devon, disembarked Sydney 23-04-1911 – unable to locate his return to England where he enlisted nor his return after war ended. He married Grace Alice Mati CORRIE, 1925 in Victoria and he died 04-11-1969, Footscray, Victoria and buried Altona Memorial Park. Boer War St. Johns Ambulance Brigade medal for South Africa 1899-1902. This is a bronze Edward VII medal awarded to the approximately 1870 Orderly's and St. Johns servicemen who volunteered for the Boer War. This medal is engraved Patrick DOYLE and was last known to be in our family in the early 1990's in Auckland New Zealand along with my grand father's Queens South Africa Medal. Any information about its current whereabouts would be greatly appreciated and we would dearly love to have them back in our family.
