Australia
Date of sale: 22 February 2010
First World War medal (British War Medal) awarded to Private John Edward Harold ST. CLAIRE of the 43rd Infantry Battalion. A discrepancy for the name of this man appears in the First World War Embarkation Roll, in that his surname is recorded simply as 'CLAIRE', withoug the prefix 'ST' as if in 'ST. CLAIRE' which it is how it appears in the medal stamping. The First World War Embarkation Roll shows that he left Adelaide on the 12th of August, 1916 aboard HMAT Ballarat. Sadly, he was killed in action on the 12th of June, 1917 and the Commonwealth War Grave Commission records (CWGC) indicate that his body was never found. He is mentioned on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres in Belgium.

I am searching for the missing medals of Private John George HARRISON. His First World War medals (British War Medal and Victory Medal) were last seen at my Grandfathers house in George Street, Spotswood in the late 60"s early 70's. The First World War Embarkation Roll indicates that he left Melbourne on the 8th of February, 1916 aboard HMAT Warilda, but it incorrectly records his Service Number as being 3840. His personnel file from the National Archives of Australia clearly states that his Service Number was in fact 3842. This is supported by the fact that I have his wallet which has his service number "3842" written on it. Because of this, I have completed two listings as it is not known which number is actually embossed on the medals. My family would dearly love to be reunited with his original medals and will gladly pay to have them back.
